sukmawati-pictureHave you ever confused asking students who love playing game to learn? In this digital century, children get used to interact with many gadgets but many of them cannot use the gadgets properly. They get cultural shocked. They use them mostly for playing games even when they are in classroom. They always wait for any opportunities using their gadget for playing than studying. So perhaps the following article can inspire you how to prepare a learning process in this situation.

Not like many friends, I have just known this tool this week. Amazing, it guides us to present another way of presentation, interactive one. Students will experience the material we prepare interactively and of course interested. My sons said it is not a lesson, it is a game. Even my elder daughter wanted to try it even thought the lesson was below her age. They felt happiness experiencing the lesson.

Microsoft Mouse Mischief is a tool to overcome limited hardware problem. We can use one computer and some mice. Students can collaborate or interact each other in one presentation in a same time. It is a Power Point add in and suitable for any age of students, especially they who love playing game. It is definitely like a game. At the first, students get the whole information they should know as usual then after that they interact with the material individually or in groups using their mice.

Interested? Let’s try it. First of all, make sure you use Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 or Microsoft PowerPoint 2010. Then you should download the tool and install it. You can download it directly from Microsoft website. Please close any Power Point file you have while downloading it. After the installation process finished, open power point and start preparing new material. Take attention on the ribbon. There is Multiple-Mouse tab now. Click the tab to prepare the interactive presentation and play the slides. Since it is an add in to Power Point, of course we should understand how to use it, right?

Picture 1. Add in to Power Point

After installing Microsoft Mouse Mischief, we have two options and four kinds of slide.

There are four kind of slides:

  1. Standart                            static slide
  2. Yes/No
  3. Multiple Choice               interactive slides
  4. Drawing

We use standard slide to present general information students should know in learning process. Then we can use interactive slides for reviewing the information many times or perhaps giving simple details. Click the Multiple-Mouse tab to make interactive slides. Always choose new slide from Multiple-Mouse tab for new interactive slide. We can prepare true/false or multiple question or another activity such as drawing. Do not forget to assign the answer. Students do not see the answer when play slide show unless everyone or group answer the question.

Now it is time to play. Every time we click Play Slide Show, teacher should identify the mouse before students participate. Put teacher’s cursor in a box and press enter. It will be changed into orange arrow. Then teacher determines whether students work individually or in team. If teacher selects individually, each student has to identify his/her cursor inside ‘click me’ box to participate or it does not exist in interactive slides. If teacher selects team mode, students click a picture to join teams. When students click a picture, their cursors will change into team picture. The number at the top of each picture shows how many students join the team. The numbers on the top right corner show mice on teams (top) and remaining mice (bottom).

Furthermore, every time student answer question in interactive slides, his/her cursor will disappear. After all students submit the answer, we are shown who has submitted firstly and correctly. Members of a team should have a same answer in answer/question slide otherwise the previous answer is cancelled automatically.

Remember students’ cursors are active only in interactive slide. Only teacher cursor can forward or backward slides, set timer in a minute, reset slide to clear students’ activity and timer in a same time, pause students’ activity or close slide show by clicking the symbols. All student’ cursor will disappear when teacher clicks pause symbol until he/she clicks it again. Always save our work, it is hard to undo our work if we do mistake. In my experience, I always close the file without saving if I do mistake making interactive slides.

How about the hardware needed? As I wrote on the beginning of this article, Microsoft Mouse Mischief can overcome limited hardware problem. We do not need PC for all students, but we need some mice. Do not worry if you do not have mice as many as students. Group them (my suggestion: not more than 4 persons in a group or they will get bored), arrange a competition (a team gets score if its cursor picture show up on the slide as the first answer correctly). They will have fun.

I know there are more great ideas out there, too– please let me know in the comments below!
